Node Types
All the node types available in the workflow builder.
Node Types
The FormWise workflow builder offers a variety of node types, each designed for a specific job. This page gives you a quick overview of every node type so you know what is available and when to use each one.
For instructions on how to add nodes to your workflow, see Workflow Builder.
The + menu on the canvas lists AI Prompt, Classify, Evaluator, Multi Run, and Webhook. If / Else, Set State, and Transform are not in the + menu: ask the Ask Assistant to add one for you (for example, "add an If / Else after the Summary step that checks the score"), then configure it like any other node. The Ask Assistant is included with the Pro and Agency plans, and with AppSumo tier 2 and above.
Start
The Start node is the entry point of every workflow. It holds two slots that define how people use your Flow:
- Questions - The form questions your users answer. Click Add Question inside the slot to add one, then click it to set it up. See Form Builder.
- Conversation Starters - Suggested first messages shown in the chat. Click Add Starter to add one.
A few rules:
- Every workflow has exactly one Start node. You cannot remove it.
- If the Flow has questions, it runs once with the user's answers. If it has no questions, it runs as a chat, once per message.
- Each question's answer becomes a variable later nodes can read, and the chat message is always available as
{{workflow.user_message}}. See Variables and Data.
Agent node
The Agent node is the core of most workflows. It sends a prompt to a large language model (like GPT, Claude, or Gemini) and returns the AI's response. In the node picker it is labeled AI Prompt.
Use it whenever you need the AI to generate text, answer a question, analyze input, summarize content, or perform any language task.
Inside the Agent node, you configure:
- Which AI model to use, and a Response Style slider from Precise to Creative.
- The Agent's Instructions (system prompt) that guide the AI's behavior.
- An optional User's Message that includes your input variables, and whether to include the chat history.
- Optional AI capabilities and tools the AI can call during its response (like web search, artifacts, or connected services).
- Advanced settings such as the output type (text or JSON).
The Agent node is powerful and flexible. For a full walkthrough, see Configuring Agent Nodes.
Classify
The Classify node uses AI to read some input and sort it into one of several categories you define. Each category becomes its own branch in the workflow, so different inputs can follow different paths.
This is perfect for:
- Intent detection - Figure out what a user is asking for (e.g., "billing question," "technical support," "general inquiry") and route them accordingly.
- Content categorization - Sort incoming text into topics or themes.
- Sentiment analysis - Determine whether feedback is positive, negative, or neutral.
To set it up:
- Add a Classify node to your workflow.
- Choose the Classify Input (for example,
{{workflow.user_message}}), or turn on Include chat history to classify the whole conversation. - Define your categories (for example: "Sales," "Support," "Other"), and add a few example inputs for each one. Examples are the best way to improve routing accuracy.
- Each message is routed automatically using your categories and examples. If that routing is unsure, or nothing fits, the Fallback model you pick decides instead.
- The workflow continues down the branch for that category.
Evaluator
The Evaluator node scores or checks its input and passes the answers to the next step. Unlike Classify, it never branches: every run continues to the next node.
Use it when you want a judgment without routing. For example:
- Score how well a resume fits a job description.
- Check whether a lead meets your qualification criteria.
- Check a user's message, or an AI reply, against safety rules before it is sent.
To set it up:
- Add an Evaluator node to your workflow. You can start from a template (like Resume screen, Support ticket triage, or Lead qualification) or write your own questions.
- Set what to Evaluate. Leave it empty to evaluate the previous step's output (on a form run, the answers).
- Add optional Instructions that every question sees, such as the job description.
- Add up to 10 Questions. Each one is a yes / no question, a score against a rubric you write (lowest level first), or a choice between options.
Later nodes read the answers as variables, such as {{Screen.fit.score}} for a step named "Screen" with a question keyed fit. The next Agent node also sees the answers in its chat history.
If/Else
The If/Else node lets you create conditional branches based on expressions you define - no AI needed. It works like a simple "if this, then that" decision.
Use it when you want to branch based on specific, predictable conditions. For example:
- If the user selected "Premium" plan, show one path. Otherwise, show another.
- If a number is greater than 100, go one way. If not, go another.
To set it up:
- Ask the Ask Assistant to add an If/Else node where you need it.
- Define one or more branches, each with a name and a condition written as an expression over your workflow variables (e.g.,
state.score > 3). - The workflow follows the first branch whose condition is true. The last branch is the default Else branch for when no conditions match.
Transform
The Transform node lets you restructure or reformat data as it moves through your workflow. You define a list of expressions, each with a key and a value, and the result becomes the input of the next node.
For example, you might use a Transform node to:
- Pull out just the "summary" field from a longer AI response.
- Combine a first name and last name into a full name.
- Convert data into a format that an external API expects.
Transform is not in the + menu. Ask the Ask Assistant to add one.
Set State
The Set State node updates one or more workflow variables with new values. Think of it as a way to save or overwrite information at a specific point in your workflow. Later nodes read these values as {{state.<name>}}.
This is useful when you want to:
- Store a result from one node so you can use it later.
- Reset a counter or flag.
- Update a variable based on something that happened earlier in the flow.
Set State cannot change the user's answers (workflow.* values). It is not in the + menu. Ask the Ask Assistant to add one.
Parallel
The Parallel node lets you run multiple branches at the same time. Each branch executes independently and simultaneously, which is useful when you have tasks that do not depend on each other. In the node picker it is labeled Multi Run.
For example, you might use Parallel to:
- Generate a title, outline, and image prompt all at once instead of one after another.
- Call multiple external APIs at the same time to speed things up.
- Run different analyses on the same input simultaneously.
Each branch runs on its own. The workflow waits until every branch has finished before it continues to the next node, and later nodes can read each branch's outputs.
Webhook
The Webhook node sends data to an external URL - a Zapier or Make scenario, a GHL workflow, or any endpoint you control. Use it to send data from your workflow to tools outside of FormWise.
For example, you might use a Webhook node to:
- Send a generated email to your email service.
- Push a lead's contact info and form answers into your CRM.
- Post a message to Slack or Discord.
- Trigger an action in Zapier or Make.
By default, the node sends a JSON payload assembled from simple toggles (contact info, form answers, session context the opening page passed in, the previous step's output, uploaded file links, conversation history). Switch to Advanced mode to choose the HTTP method and write a custom body and headers by hand.
